People describe tree work in all sorts of ways, and the trade has its own names for the same jobs. Here is what the common terms usually mean, so you know what to ask for. If you are still not sure, describe the tree and we will tell you what it needs.
"Tree trimming" or "tree cutting"
Usually a crown reduction or crown thinning: taking height and spread off a tree that has outgrown its space, or letting more light through it, without harming the tree. This is the most common request we get and the one most often quoted wrongly by unqualified operators.
"Branch removal" or "cutting back branches"
Crown lifting where low branches are in the way of a path, drive or garden, or deadwooding where limbs are dead or unsafe. If branches overhang a neighbour or the road, we will advise what you can and cannot legally cut.
"Tree removal" and large tree removal
Straight felling where there is room to drop the tree safely, or sectional dismantling where there is not. Large trees near houses, garages and boundaries come down in controlled pieces, lowered on ropes. We also grind out the stump if you want the space back.
"Arborist", "tree surgeon" or "tree specialist"
All the same thing: someone trained to work on trees safely. What matters is the qualification behind the name. Our arborists hold City & Guilds NPTC certificates for chainsaw work, climbing and aerial rescue, and we are IPAF certified for powered access platforms.
